Imposter syndrome is that inner voice that just won’t shut up. It tells you you’re not good enough, that your wins are just luck, and that everyone else around you has it all figured out. Sound familiar?
You’re not alone. And more importantly it’s not true!
At Generation Next, we know how easy it is to doubt yourself when you’re just starting out or climbing the ladder. Whether you’re an apprentice, new to your industry, or even running your own business, self-doubt can creep in and hold you back. But it doesn’t have to.
It’s that feeling that you’re winging it, even when you’re smashing it. It can look like:
Playing down your achievements with “it was nothing”
Avoiding new challenges because you’re scared you’ll mess it up
Setting impossibly high standards and never feeling like you’ve done enough
Overworking just to feel like you belong
Here’s the truth: you do belong. You’ve earned your place, and your progress is real.
If you feel like you’re constantly comparing yourself to others, or you’re not “experienced enough” to speak up, you’re not alone. Social media, competitive workplaces, and the pressure to “have it all figured out” can make it harder to believe in yourself.
But here’s what we want you to remember: no one starts out confident, they grow into it. And you can too.
You don’t need to pretend it’s not happening. Recognise those thoughts for what they are – feelings, not facts. Even celebs like Emma Watson and Olivia Colman have opened up about their own imposter moments. You’re in good company!
Start a “wins” note on your phone or keep a journal of everything you’re proud of, big or small. That project you led, the praise from your manager, or even speaking up in a meeting. It all counts.
Next time you think, “I’m not qualified,” try saying:
“I’m learning, growing, and I bring value.”
Or, instead of “I don’t deserve this,” say:
“I’ve worked hard and I’ve earned this.”
Language matters. Speak kindly to yourself you’d never talk to a friend the way you talk to yourself!
Mentors, colleagues, or networks like Generation Next can be game-changers. Surround yourself with people who get it, who lift you up, and who remind you of your strengths.
Newsflash: no one feels 100% ready all the time. Growth comes from giving things a go applying for that award, speaking at that event, or stepping up for that new role. You don’t need permission to show up.
Imposter syndrome can be loud, but it doesn’t get to decide what you’re capable of. You’ve got talent, you’ve got drive and you deserve to be recognised for it!
