The Art of Public Speaking

Ian Stringer is a passionate media professional with a lifelong love for sports. Although he realised in his late teens that he wouldn’t make it as a professional football player, he quickly turned his passion into a career aspiration: being paid to watch the game. Now, he’s living his dream.

Starting out at Dixons selling TVs straight out of college, Ian wanted to cultivate a strong work ethic and gain experience. Despite the grind of the job, he loved being part of a team and helping people. But he yearned for Saturdays off the shop floor and in the stadiums.

In 2002, armed with four years of retail experience, Ian made a bold move into the media industry, starting by answering phones at his local radio station. Over two seasons, he worked his way up from tea boy to presenting early morning shows and reporting on football games.

His big break came in 2008 when he landed the role of Leicester City reporter, a dream job for the lifelong Foxes fan. Since then, he’s covered 600 live games, including League One, Championship, and Premier League matches. He’s even ventured into the Champions League and covered football around the world, from LA to Hong Kong to Europe’s biggest footballing powerhouses.

In 2017, Ian’s outstanding work earned him a ‘Highly Commended’ award from the Sports Journalists’ Association for his commentary on Leicester City’s historic Premier League victory.

Beyond his career in media, Ian has a passion for running, having completed 11 marathons including Tokyo, London, and Bangkok. He’s also had a top 10 single, adding to the colourful tapestry of his life outside the sports arena.
